An agricultural technician is an individual who devotes themselves to making sure that crops, lands and animals are kept healthy and that the fields and crops keep growing and producing as much as possible.  These technicians will conduct research, experiments, tests and much more to ensure that everything is running the best that it can be. They will make improvements where they find that there should be improvements and they will inform those interested when serious changes should be made.  Most agricultural technicians salaries will be anywhere between forty thousand to close to a hundred thousand a year, depending on what area you choose to get into. 

The Job

In the field of agricultural technicians you will find that these men and woman will obtain samples from the tissues and blood of animals to ensure that they are healthy, producing and growing properly. They will also obtain samples from plants and the earth to make sure that it is healthy and growing properly.  They will run tests on machinery to insure that everything is up to speed and working properly as well.  Agricultural technicians also check and run tests and experiments of the overall field that they are studying to ensure that it is running in the best way that it can be.  Essentially you will find that agricultural technicians are the people who are hired to help to speed up production, reproduction and ensure that everything is running the best that it can be.  They will often be writing up reports, data and interpreting the data and presenting it at meetings and to their bosses.

These are the major companies, businesses and groups that are found to be hiring agricultural technicians.  These men and woman will go out and research, test, experiment, obtain samples and figure out data on whatever their employer wants them to look at.  This is a very serious job and agricultural technicians will bring about many changes to a business to help them improve their production and their care of their livestock and crops. They help businesses to remain in business, to speed up productions, p[rovide healthier lifestyles and essentially make more money.

You will find that most agricultural technician employers will require that agricultural technicians have a high school diploma at the very least. Some employers will want agricultural technicians to have a two year associates degree in areas such as biology, food science, agriculture, botany or some other scientific field. 

Skills

Employers will look to see if you have an eye for detail, can you follow instructions and directions well both orally and written, do you have any knowledge or understanding of scientific equipment and how to care for plants and animals. Most employers will also look to see if you have any idea how to conduct research, obtain samples, they will see how familiar you are with writing up research papers, spread sheets, data entry, email and other forms of computer work.  ]

You will find technicians working in grain elevators most of their days.

You will find that employment outlook for this job is actually extremely positive.  Agricultural technicians will see a major advancement in positions and higher pay, especially for those who are working for the government either state or federal.  You will find that the longer that you work for them you will begin to be advanced through the ranks.  Also the door to agricultural technicians is getting ready to swing wide open. With the major advancements in the field of agriculture the need for agricultural technicians and researchers is growing exponentially larger.  There is a major need for men and woman in this field of work to take these positions. There is also a growing need for those with advanced degrees such as bachelors and even graduate degrees. These men and woman are needed for more of the scientific aspects, testing, experimenting and creating the reports, data and to make presentations. 

Working Conditions

There are different areas in the field that you can choose to work. Depending on which field you decide to go into will ultimately depend on the conditions that you will be subjected to.  These fields are areas such as the following:

  • Technicians

  • Technical Farm Workers
  • Field Representatives/Agents
You will find that those who work in the the agricultural business as a technician will find that they will be working in grain elevators mainly. This work will be indoors and routine, checking on the grains, making sure everything is working properly and being distributed properly.  Those who chose to go into the research aspects of the job will find that this is also a job that will be worked indoors generally.  You will find that they will spend the bulk of their time working on reports, running research, experimenting and giving presentations.  Those who choose to go into the technical farm working will find that this is one of the more laborious jobs. These individuals will be out in the fields working on the farm with the animals, crops, lands, farmers and everyone else. Typically this will be hands on farm management and managing how the fields and animals are doing.  Finally, those who choose to go into the area of field representatives and agents will find that they too will also being dealing with farmers, they will be traveling all over the country a lot and they should plan on being gone during the harvest season. These individuals will have some of the longest work days and at times will be gone for long periods of time. They will have a tough time with scheduling and at times will feel overwhelmed. Essentially these individuals will be meeting with farmers to see when crops will be shipped they will try to figure out how big harvesting is looking and they will be trying to lock in scheduling and more. They will also be checking to make sure that everything is labeled properly and that size and quality are up to standard.  Once harvest season is over they will meet back up with farmers and discuss other options for production and packaging.
